Bringing dogs to Costa Rica

What challenges will should I expect with bringing a Shih Tzu to Costa Rica ?  I have current rabies vaccination papers.

Special paperwork is needed in order to bring your pet into Costa Rica. A certificate is required from a Nationally recognized vet. It has to be officially stamped and it could take days for mailing since offices are not located everywhere. Also, airlines seem to have specific rules about traveling with your pet. Check with your airline or their website for particular requirements.

We brought our dog from the US with us and the flight and going through customs was not difficult...but I had all the required paperwork. Our dog was tiny so she was able to ride in the cabin with us but we had to have a certain kind/size carrying case for her to be allowed. Upon arrival in Costa Rica, we had to bring her to a certain area in the airport where they checked her papers and did a body search.

Hi Rebecca and community,

did you ever take your dog to Panama? They have some requirements too when you bring your dog/pet via plane. E.g. health certificate, 40 days quarantine, etc.

I would be interested in how things are at land borders ...

e.g. do you also have to show the health certificate, and doe the dogs have to be quarantined when crossing the border between CR and Panama?

Sorry for the late reply, we've been moving and without internet for a few days.


We've never brought our dog over to Panama. I would suggest locating the American Embassy in Panama via Google.

Then contact them. They should know what you need to do.
