We have been looking at the heavy duty Sterilite totes but we are interested in knowing if anyone has experience with other ways that may work better. We figured if the totes are acceptable for air travel we could also put them to use after we get to CR.

If I were you....those totes would be a good idea...IF THEY are acceptable for flight.
While I have NOT used any...the thing you MUST remember is that MOST airlines give you a 50 lb limit. So as long as you are good with that and know you can use them after you arrive, then it's a good bet and I'm guessing stronger than suitcases.
Rebecca and I came with 10 suitcases...because of the weight limit...but some things did get damaged. NOT terrible...but it happens.

Unless it's changed, the totes in the pic are allowed on most airlines. I have about 20 and they're very handy. Stackable and somewhat sealed to keep the bugs out. I taped the air holes on the ones in the garage. Plastic items are expensive here, they sell fast and if bought on sale, you can make a small profit if you don't need them.
Others buy used soft luggage at a Thrift store for cheap and donate them upon arrival.
The bigger question is...do you really need to bring it here? I ran a Charity for years and had so many donations of items people thought they needed. If money is not an issue, go for it. My repair shop did very well fixing blenders, microwaves, tv's etc.

Yes, the totes are much like the photo you supplied and are not expensive but the do have wheels, handle and lock. We are keeping in mind the size and weight allowed by the airlines and really we are not considering taking things other than our good set of pots and pans, our best tools, etc. We don't see a need to take appliances. We plan to rent around after arriving in order to see everything before making our last permanent considerations and figure the totes would come in handy for storage and moving. We are waiting for the Baby Boomer law to come in to effect so we can bring our RAV4, kayaks, etc. and we plan to purchase a hauling trailer once we get there.
We will also be using our duffle bags and the backpacks we used to backpack around northern Europe when we both turned 50 anos, years ago, and the tote items will be packed in clothes and bubble rap, but anything breakable will come as carry-on luggage, especially our cat Miss Lily. And as I told Eduardo, "We are keeping in mind the size and weight allowed by the airlines and really we are not considering taking things other than our good set of pots and pans, our best tools, etc. We don't see a need to take appliances. Sounds like a good plan.
I'm hoping the Baby Boomer law passes soon myself...as we have a lot of tools and keepsake things we want to bring over...but much to big for suitcases.
