Hi Allen and Rebecca,
I would like to know more about interacting in Tica communities. I have heard that the Costa Rican people are very friendly and accommodating. However when we were there, we only met people that were there in some service capacity since we stayed in a resort area.
What has been y'alls experience? You have lived in country for some time. Have you made genuine friendships? Or only friendships based on necessity.
Thanks
Chris

Hey Chris,
Yes, I believe that most Costa Ricans are very friendly and try to be helpful. In my opinion, the best way to interact and meet Ticos...is to hang out where they hang out and try to communicate with them in those areas. i.e church, beach, town farmer's market, local parks in each town and town events during holidays.
Rebecca has met some nice people who she thinks would have been a genuine friend...however, since we have moved a lot...we don't have an long lasting relationships.
For me...while I have a couple of TICOS, I think could be or are friends...the MAJORITY of the Ticos I have met, I felt like they only wanted to be friends for WHAT they might get out of the Gringo - Tico Relationship. IMPORTANT - that may only be my experience...that may not be true for others.
Unfortunately...I have been burned by some Ticos who I thought were friends. So...be careful and do not be too trusting to quickly.
I hope that helps.
Allen

It helps very much and is about what I thought. We lived in the UAE for some time and I experienced that from a few people groups there that I had to interact with usually for business stuff. Okay thanks for the advice. What are the restriction looking like now? We are planning a trip for late Feb/ March.

TICO not TICA got it...........
Yes Chris,
FYI... in most cases when referring to the Costa Rican people...most will say the Ticos... meaning all people. In reality Tico means men and Tica mean women. But when talking in general terms...you would say "The Tico culture is a relaxed laid back culture that enjoys spending family time." In an example like that, you would never say the Tica culture.
But you might say, in Costa Rica..."The Ticas are really beautiful women."
Anyway...to your question. What are the restriction looking like now?
Here is a topic that I think would be interesting to discuss on the forum: Renting out your own property in CR
I've seen that many properties for sale in CR could be great for accommodating guests. I was wondering, is it common or very easy for expats to host things like AirBnB rooms or to run private BnBs? Or even just renting out a room/floor long term? Is doing something like that a realistic expectation for someone thinking of moving down and buying property (and eventually becoming a permanent resident)?
I wonder if it would be worth it to create a page for this on the forum if it's a popular topic?

Thanks!
Thanks for that suggestion!
Yes...I think this would be a good topic and also a good topic for a video. I think I'll create an area for this topic...in hopes that others will share their experiences.
Just a quick answer...If you have the money, this is a very worthwhile idea. I know several people (expats) who make a decent to GREAT living from renting their properties or rooms as an AirBnB.
So...if you are thinking about this....you are heading in the right direction.
I think I"ll do a video soon to point you in the right direction.
